Tom's latest research on wide swath haylage harvest, a harvest method to improve the capture of plant nutrients for milk production and reduce weather related losses. This work is being expanded to encompass the rapid dry down methods for harvesting red clover. Working with both university and private industry, winter forage research has brought double cropping to the Northeast US and southern Canada producing profitable cover crops of the highest quality forage.

NOFA-NY Field Day: Value Added Grains Variety Trials

To bring back economically viable grain production to our region, this project has focused on adding value to grains in multiple ways: by growing organically, growing grains with high market potential (specifically heritage and "ancient" wheat), and processing grains to create even higher-value products. The field tour will include discussion with Research Support Specialist David Benscher, Gary Bergstrom of Cornell Plant Pathology, Elizabeth Dyck from OGRIN, and other OREI partners. Cornell PRO-DAIRY is partnering with the Wyoming Dairy Institute and Cornell Cooperative Extension to offer regional calf management training programs. These programs will be offered statewide at six video conferencing sites from 6:30 to 9:00 pm October 28, October 30, November 4 and November 6. On-farm tour will be November 15th from 10-3 at McMahon's EZ Acres. Cost for the entire program is $50 per person. Register with the regional site. This program qualifies for Farm Service Agency Borrower Credits.
Program participants will also receive a $40 voucher toward the full day registration fee for the PRO-DAIRY Calf and Heifer Congress December 10 and 11 at the RIT Inn and Conference Center, Rochester, NY. Registration for the CNY location is limited to 10 participants.

NYSERDA offers energy audits to help eligible farms and on-farm producers identify ways to save energy and money on utility bills. Reports include recommendations for energy efficiency measures.Eligibility
Eligible farms include but are not limited to dairies, orchards, greenhouses, vegetables, vineyards, grain dryers, and poultry/egg. The farms must also be customers of New York State investor-owned utilities and contribute to the System Benefits Charge (SBC). Please check your farm’s current utility bills to see if your farm pays the SBC.
