The Summit will bring together leaders in the New York State malting barley supply chain to provide:

The South Central NY Dairy and Field Crops Team is excited to announce that we will resume in-person meetings of our Central NY Dairy Girl Network Peer Group this summer. This peer group brings dairy women together to build camaraderie, share ideas and experiences, and learn from one another. We typically invite a guest to share an informal presentation about a topic of interest, and we encourage everyone to join the discussion. All women involved in any aspect of the dairy industry are welcome to attend.

Participants will tour the listed fields in the West Groton area before the meeting, then bring questions and comments to the meeting at the Scheffler's farm. Our focus will be on annual forages, small grains, soybeans, and corn, but welcome other crop questions as well. We will begin with a light lunch, so registration is required.

Join Ryan and Annie Murray to learn how they have adapted New Zealand style grazing to manage their 90-cow organic Jersey herd in Truxton, NY. With NRCS grazing specialist Karen Hoffman.

Your Extension Specialists will be chipping corn stalks and checking dry matters to target corn silage harvest timing. We are collaborating with Tully Ag Center and John Winchell, Territory Sales Representative with ALLTECH. Dry matters will be determined using NIR, which allows a short turn-around time. Masks will need to be worn at the mill, as well as 6 feet of social distancing.

Join farmers Kathie and Kirk Arnold on a tour of Twin Oaks Dairy LLC, which has been shipping certified organic milk since 1998. Rotational grazing is a foundational principle of the farm that keeps soils covered and sequestering carbon. They recently started planting trees in some of their pastures in a foray into silvopasture. This is their second year in making compost using the Elaine Ingham Bio Complete composting recipe and process.

From 9:30 - 1:30, with a break for lunch, attendees will join in a webinar hosted by the statewide CCE team and covers the topics outlined above. From 1:30 - 3:00 attendees will be given an opportunity to engage in a Q&A with local panelists. The panelists will include 2 farmers who are currently working with solar developers, 2 municipal representatives who have been regularly engaged in this conversation, and the Energy & Climate Change Team Leader at CCE Tompkins.

Registration is required for the event and a registration fee of $10 will go to help cover the costs of lunch, speaker, and location fees. 

A primer for beginning farmers, or a tune-up for those already in production, on recording income and annual expenses, capital expenditures and depreciation with additional information covering loans & credit card or revolving loan payments, sales of business assets, and deducting losses.

This hybrid course will introduce attendees to the key raw milk parameters that influence organic dairy product quality & shelf-life and how to control these parameters at the farm. In the self-paced module of this course, attendees will learn about the four raw milk parameters that impact processed product quality: somatic cells, total bacteria, spore-forming bacteria, and flavor & odor profiles of raw milk. The South Central NY Dairy and Field Crops Team is excited to announce that we will resume in-person meetings of our Central NY Dairy Girl Network Peer Group this summer. This peer group brings dairy women together to build camaraderie, share ideas and experiences, and learn from one another. Participants will tour the listed fields in the West Groton area before the meeting, then bring questions and comments to the meeting at the Scheffler's farm. Join Ryan and Annie Murray to learn how they have adapted New Zealand style grazing to manage their 90-cow organic Jersey herd in Truxton, NY. With NRCS grazing specialist Karen Hoffman.

Your Extension Specialists will be chipping corn stalks and checking dry matters to target corn silage harvest timing. We are collaborating with Tully Ag Center and John Winchell, Territory Sales Representative with ALLTECH. Dry matters will be determined using NIR, which allows a short turn-around time. Masks will need to be worn at the mill, as well as 6 feet of social distancing.

Rotational grazing is a foundational principle of the farm that keeps soils covered and sequestering carbon. They recently started planting trees in some of their pastures in a foray into silvopasture. This is their second year in making compost using the Elaine Ingham Bio Complete composting recipe and process.

On Tuesday, October 26th, at the NYS Grange Building in Cortland NY from 9:30 am - 3:00 pm, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cortland County, and co-sponsored by the Cortland County Soil & Water Conservation District, will be hosting an event that will provide farmers and other landowners with information that addresses the topics of utility-scale solar development, leasing, and regulations. From 9:30 - 1:30, with a break for lunch, attendees will join in a webinar hosted by the statewide CCE team and covers the topics outlined above. From 1:30 - 3:00 attendees will be given an opportunity to engage in a Q&A with local panelists. The panelists will include 2 farmers who are currently working with solar developers, 2 municipal representatives who have been regularly engaged in this conversation, and the Energy & Climate Change Team Leader at CCE Tompkins.

Registration is required for the event and a registration fee of $10 will go to help cover the costs of lunch, speaker, and location fees. 

A primer for beginning farmers, or a tune-up for those already in production, on recording income and annual expenses, capital expenditures and depreciation with additional information covering loans & credit card or revolving loan payments, sales of business assets, and deducting losses.

This hybrid course will introduce attendees to the key raw milk parameters that influence organic dairy product quality & shelf-life and how to control these parameters at the farm. In the self-paced module of this course, attendees will learn about the four raw milk parameters that impact processed product quality: somatic cells, total bacteria, spore-forming bacteria, and flavor & odor profiles of raw milk. Attendees will then learn, in-depth, how to control these parameters through best practices for farm management from our instructors during our live virtual workshop on December 16.

The NY Certified Organic (NYCO) Discussion Meetings are back for just one meeting this winter and another this spring. The planning committee felt that we could have a safe winter meeting at J Martin Auctions due to the size of the facility which allows for personal spacing, for those who feel comfortable and wish to attend in-person. This virtual workshop is for anyone who works with dairy cattle. This program will cover how to identify lameness, what factors cause lameness, and practical strategies to avoid and mitigate lameness on your dairy.

The Summit will bring together leaders in the New York State malting barley supply chain to provide:

From 1:30 - 3:00 attendees will be given an opportunity to engage in a Q&A with local panelists. The panelists will include 2 farmers who are currently working with solar developers, 2 municipal representatives who have been regularly engaged in this conversation, and the Energy & Climate Change Team Leader at CCE Tompkins.

This hybrid course will introduce attendees to the key raw milk parameters that influence organic dairy product quality & shelf-life and how to control these parameters at the farm. Jan 27 - DMC & DRP: Navigating the options, with Chris Wolf, Cornell University & KC Slade, Crop Growers

Have you heard about the changes to DMC?  Are you interested in DRP but don't know where to start?  This meeting will go over the basics of both programs for dairy farms and presenters will be live to lead discussion and answer questions!

The NY Certified Organic (NYCO) Discussion Meetings are back for just one meeting this winter and another this spring. The planning committee felt that we could have a safe winter meeting at J Martin Auctions due to the size of the facility which allows for personal spacing, for those who feel comfortable and wish to attend in-person. We will also have a zoom link for those that would like to attend virtually.

This webinar series will be presented by Dr. Heather Huson, Faculty, Dept. of Animal Science, Cornell University. 

Based on Dr. Huson's Applied Genetics course this program will give participants an understanding of how to use genetic information to reach their herd goals. An optional in-person session will provide an opportunity for hands on practice with genetic analysis tools.

Option for in-person workshop at the conclusion of webinar series; choice between one of two dates/locations. Must attend final webinar session (3/16) to attend in-person workshop

Feb 24 - The Costs of Dairy Labor, with Jason Karzses, Cornell PRO-DAIRY

Labor is on top of many NY dairy farmers minds right now.  Jason will go over the economics of labor in NY and lead discussion around what farmers have put in place in their own dairy businesses.

This meeting is targeted at both experienced and new farm workers who are operating trucks and ag equipment while applying manure and harvesting crops. There will be CAFO training credits available for farms that need them. This meeting will be held live and in person, but a zoom option allowing remote viewing will be offered.
